1. A vertical pipe connected to a waste or soil distribution system that prevents a back pressure or a vacuum that might siphon the water out of a trap. 2. Vertical pipe to provide passageway for expulsion of water vapor and vent gases from gas-burning equipment to outside air. 3. A free opening to provide air intake, expulsion, or circulation in such areas as underfloor crawl spaces and attics.
